Crested Butte Mountain Resort (CBMR) has released a Master Development Plan as part of seeking approval for its proposed Snodgrass Mountain terrain expansion. CBMR is expected to formally request that the Forest Service begin an EIS process for Snodgrass as early as July. If the Forest Service accepts the application, the public will initially have 45 days to comment on the proposal.
CBMR has floated this proposal twice in the last 30 years, but development of Snodgrass has never occurred due to strong local opposition to the project. That opposition continues today.
There is a great deal of conflicting information and statistics regarding the proposed Snodgrass expansion. CBMR is constantly looking for new ways to make the Snodgrass expansion look like something more than a huge real estate development scheme. Its website brags of consolations made to the environment, but the plan would still threaten water quality and wildlife, and is premised on the sale of multi-million dollar ski-in, ski-out living arrangements at the base of Snodgrass. It also appears that Snodgrass would not offer the high quality intermediate skiing experience CBMR claims it would, drawing into question CBMR’s claims of economic salvation for the area were Snodgrass to be built.
Colorado Wild is working with High Country Citizens Alliance and Friends of Snodgrass to track the environmental conflicts with the proposed development. For more information, visit: http://www.friendsofsnodgrass.org/
